Started by John Losavio in 1939, John's Meat Market in Scotch Plains dry ages its own prime beef. “It’s all raised on vegetarian feed — no hormones, no antibiotics,” says John's son Nick. “We handpick everything.“ The store also sells chicken, pork, prepared foods, and prized Colorado lamb. Here's what I think about going food shopping. Before I go, I think of it as a chore, something that has to be done, and that I'd much rather be lunching with a friend. And then I think about going to Eden Gourmet in South Orange where I can shop and have lunch with a friend.

Sex & The City. What a great movie! What a great TV show. We love Carrie for her fashion sense and we love Charlotte for knowing about all the best places to go. Well, Charlotte purchased a fabulous gourmet food basket from Eden Gourmet in NYC (Season 4). And now you can do the same here in the suburbs.

| Three years ago, townsfolk staged a candlelight vigil parading placards asking "Got Milk?" because they didn't have a grocery store. They now have 13,000 square feet of edible eye candy, increased property values and a very good neighbor. |

Step inside South Orange newcomer Eden Gourmet and, like me, you may be hard-pressed to describe it accurately. You might think it's like the old Balducci's in Manhattan but bigger. Or Zabar's without the hype. Perhaps similar to Wegman's with just the good stuff. Or Delicious Orchards, but whimsical and with way more products...
